COMPARISON BETWEEN SHAPED AND NON-SHAPED PRODUCTS IN SIC BASE

The Technical Department of TEIDE REFRACTORY SOLUTIONS has developed a deeper and broader study of shaped and non-shaped products based in silicium carbide, following the same line of older studies which is reported in the below link:

In order to know more and to be able to quantify the behavior of such materials based on silicon carbide, our Technical Department has developed several test to compare 5 shaped products and other 5 non-shaped ones.

Below this lines is shown the percentage (%) of the variation in weight with regard Temperature (ºC) in trials of 100 hours, where the trends of this different types of materials ( shaped and non-shaped),can be analyzed.

Once the study has been done, we can observe that Non Shaped products have a tendency to present a greater variation of weight at elevated temperatures, such variation is always around 2 – 2.5 times higher than the one that Shaped products have.

Consequently, it can be concluded that enquiries for temperature’s requirements >950ºC is adequate to use Shaped materials based on silicon carbide since the increase in weight is directly associated with the oxidation of silicon carbide. This fact produces remarkable deterioration, causing a decrease in the conductivity and an increase in dimension.

This contrasting trend, suggests that for the starting in service of this class of materials based silicon carbide, the temperature of use is critical; as a result, is optimal to be rightly informed when these kinds of materials is requested.
