THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT ASSEMBLY IN ROTARY KILNS: JOINTS

During assembly, great care must be paid to the joints so as to avoid diverse issues. Types of joints in a circular kiln:

  • Annular rings
  • Compensation seals
  • Sliding rings
  • Expansion joints

Similarly, special attention must be shown to kilns that will contain liquid metals and/or slag, and the tightness of their annular rings in particular. These joints should never be more than 2mm thick.

If joints more than 2mm thick are applied in this type of work issues may arise. These include dislodgements or flaking in thermal shock conditions and bursting. The following is an extremely useful example that demonstrates this problem: The photograph shows how 4 rings form an annular ring thicker than 2mm.

This excess of material between the joints caused the collapse of these rings when the kiln was being heated up, as can be seen in the following photograph:
